The Dalles - Spray Permanent 200k

Deschutes River, Oregon State ParkDeschutes River, Oregon State Park (20-Jun-2008)
The profiles, route sheets and maps are for The Dalles-Spray in either direction (Spray-The Dalles). There are strategic reasons for choosing the direction of travel. Starting in the Dalles results in more elevation gain but a lower risk of high headwinds from the prevailing west winds. Starting in Spray is a lot of work unless you are traveling on a randonnee and you spend the night in Spray.

The Dalles to Rufus (23 miles)
The best, most secure place to park is The Dalles Marina. See the map below for the Marina location. There are 24 hour services at The Dalles bridge where you can get a receipt to document the start time. The first 10 miles is on the shoulder of I-84. The freeway has a rumble strip so the debris collect on the shoulder so having somewhat rugged tires is a good thing. The route follows OR206 starting at Celilo all the way to Rufus.

Rufus to Condon (50 miles)
The route climbs out of the Columbia River following Scott Canyon road. About halfway to Condon the route crosses the Deshutes River where there are restrooms but no drinking water. It is a long climb out of the Deshutes river valley and a slow climb onward to Condon. You will pass through a large wind farm where the wind is frequently strong enough to power huge wind mills.

Condon to Spray (51 miles)
There are several small cafes in Condon as well as a supermarket where you can get water. The next water after Condon is at Service Creek at mile 112 or at Fossil at mile 92 if you want to detour off the route and into Fossil. Services are most likely open between 09:00 and 17:00. Fossil is a very small town and the offering is limited. Service Creek is a small restaurant. There are two significant hills to climb between Condon and Service Creek. At Service Creek, the route tends up hill slightly to Spray. Spray is a very small town. There are two stores and a motel and business hours are limited.
